The Voice of Generations

I once met a guy who stuttered. His grandfather began stuttering when he was shell shocked in WWI. His father picked it up and so did his son. The stutter echoed down the generations.

It made me think about the issue more broadly. Are there characteristics in a person's spoken language that could be traced back through family, ancestral links? I don't mean simply accent or dialect. I am thinking about syntactical and maybe phonological characteristics being part of a shared genetic history.

Maybe this issue could provide an identification of a cultural voice. It would be fascinating to use key, cultural stories as reference points. (I am thinking here about legends and 'fairy stories'. Maybe, the history stories that resonate within a culture would be significant reference points, as well.

ILD is Not Intended to Analyze Poetry
... but look what happens when you do!

As Kingfishers Catch Fire
(First Stanza)

Gerard Manley Hopkins

As king fishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame;
As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell's
Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name;
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells;
Selves -- goes itself; myself it speaks and spells,
Crying What I do is me: for that I came.

The analysis of the first stanza is as follows. I have emboldened the words that the ILD analysis has highlighted.

GMH creates a cascade of information. He deals with it by equally emphasizing thinking and feeling. His words are dominated by vigorous action. (His famous ‘sprung rhythm’?)

GMH is strongly focused on the material world and his certainty is unwavering. He is spontaneous, extrovert and very sincere.

His singular message has far more thoughts than normal conversation.

His authorial/poetic voice shows strong competence and curiosity, and his attitude is highly adventurous. He is unafraid to confront issues and his language is energized.

He is highly engaged, painstaking and persuasive. (He also gives a strong indication of being bold, passionate, polite and pragmatic.)

At a secondary level, his words suggest that he is reasonably accommodating, good-natured and appreciative. He is insistent and ever so slightly uncharitable.

As an instant analysis, I think that's pretty good.

What do you think?

Body Language Rethink

I was reading recently the extent to which US judges use their own analysis of body language when viewing police interview videos. Apparently, many have no training in body language analysis but they use it to determine guilt or otherwise (i.e. if a suspect looks nervous when asked if they committed a/the crime).

IL provides an excellent new perspective on body language. If you watch people's gestures, postures and facial expressions, you will see the five modes. Hands often gesture to indicate individual info facts. They shift left and right to indicate infer analysis. They come together to indicate conclusions in infer. That gesture is stronger or involves chest/heart touching when infix beliefs are indicated.

Of course, most of body language, as we currently know it, refers to infeel mode, so that it pretty obvious. And, equally obvious, are gestures that are about action: palm display for 'stop' and finger curling for 'come here'.

Fascinating stuff, huh?

Compelling Selling

The Handshake Transaction

At the heart of Infra Language is the idea of transaction. Whether that be between friends, lovers, family or work colleagues. And, the quintessential transaction is the purchase of goods and services. So, here, you will find an astonishingly pure form of Infra Language.

It is no surprise to me to learn that the ancient Greek god Hermes (the Roman's called him 'Mercury') was the god of transactions. He was the one with wings on his feet. He was also the god of language and where were his temples built? At the crossroads, where transactions, languages and people met.

Listen to
Compelling Selling and you will truly understand.

Making Decisions Can

Be Decisive

Surely, being able to make decisions, and good ones, can be highly significant for the success of an organization and of a career. For some people, making a decision is as easy as pie. For others, it is fraught with uncertainties that can reach hysterical levels.

But, there is a method to making decisions and, with practice, you can make better decisions, over time. Welcome to the Beginnings
of Infra Language.

There will be some of you who will remember that you were here at the start. That's fantastic. I am definitely with you.

I will cover lots of issues related to Infra Language in this blog. I hope you find it interesting and, more to the point, practical.

I am about to release Government on Tweet Street. It is an ebooklet guide to writing Twitter tweets for government officials. It's a ground breaking approach to writing for government employees and it has a strong component related to Infra Language.

You see, the key to understanding people who tweet and responding to them effectively is to begin with Infra Language. The five purposes that drive people to communicate via Twitter are no other than the five modes of Infra Language. So, you can understand people's tweets on the basis that they play the role of Informer, Assessor, Authorizer, Empathizer or Instructor. Their tweets are shaped in such a way that usually makes that clear.

I am considering writing a general use version of Government on Tweet Street, which should be very useful for anyone who wants to use Infra Language as they tweet.

I'll keep you in touch with that.

Take care

Francis
